ಅಮೆರಿಕ, ಜರ್ಮನಿ, ಫ್ರಾನ್ಸ್ ಮತ್ತು ಬ್ರಿಟನ್್ಗಳ ಈ ಕಂಪನಿಗಳು ಕಾಲಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಭಾರತದ ಗ್ರಾಹಕ ಉದ್ಧಾರವಾಗಿಬಿಡುತ್ತಾನೆ, ವಿದೇಶಿ ನೇರ ಬಂಡವಾಳ ಹೂಡಿಕೆ ಭಾರೀ ಪ್ರಮಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಹರಿದುಬರುತ್ತದೆ, ಮಿಲಿಯಗಟ್ಟಲೆ ಉದ್ಯೋಗಗಳು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಯಾಗುತ್ತವೆ, ಉದ್ಯೋಗದ ಗುಣಮಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲೂ ಸುಧಾರಣೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಗ್ರಾಹಕರಿಗೆ ಅಗಾಧ ಆಯ್ಕೆಗಳು ಲಭ್ಯವಾಗುತ್ತವೆ, ಬೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಡಿತವುಂಟಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಸಣ್ಣಪುಟ್ಟ ಉದ್ಯಮಿಗಳಿಗೂ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ ಗುತ್ತಿಗೆಗಳು ದೊರೆಯುತ್ತವೆ, ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ಷಮತೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ಸುಧಾರಣೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಮೂಲಭೂತ ಸೌಕರ್ಯಗಳ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೀವ್ರ ಪ್ರಗತಿಯುಂಟಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಚಿಲ್ಲರೆ ಬಿಕರಿ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನದ ಜಾರಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಸರಕು ಸಾಗಣೆ, ಶೈತ್ಯಾಗಾರ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಬದಲಾವಣೆ ಕಂಡುಬರುತ್ತದೆ.
ಕಳೆದ ವಾರ ಚಿಲ್ಲರೆ ಮಾರಾಟ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಶೇ. 51ರಷ್ಟು ವಿದೇಶಿ ನೇರ ಬಂಡವಾಳ ಹೂಡಿಕೆಗೆ (ಎಫ್್ಡಿಐ) ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಸಂಪುಟ ಅಸ್ತು ನೀಡಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಈ ರೀತಿಯ ಮಾತುಗಳು ಕೇಳಿಬರುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಒಬ್ಬ ರೈತನಿಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಉತ್ಪನ್ನಗಳಿಗೆ ನೇರ ಮಾರುಕಟ್ಟೆ ಹಾಗೂ ದಲ್ಲಾಳಿಗಳ ತಲೆನೋವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಸೂಕ್ತ ಬೆಲೆ ಸಿಗುವುದಾದರೆ ಏಕೆ ಬೇಡವೆನ್ನಬೇಕು? ಗ್ರಾಹಕರಿಗೆ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಬೆಲೆಗೆ ಸರಕುಗಳು ಸಿಗುತ್ತವೆಂದರೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಯೇ ಅಲ್ಲವೇ? ಅಮೆರಿಕದಲ್ಲಿವೆ, ಯೂರೋಪ್್ನಾದ್ಯಂತ ಇವೆ, ಅಲ್ಲೇನು ರೈತರಿಲ್ಲವಾ? ಅವರೆಲ್ಲ ಹಾಳಾಗಿ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದಾರೇನು ಎಂಬ ವಾದವನ್ನೂ ಮುಂದಿಡಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಹಾಗಾದರೆ ಇದೆಲ್ಲಾ ನಿಜವಾ? ಇವರ ಮಾತುಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ನಿಜಕ್ಕೂ ವಿಶ್ವಾಸವಿಡಬಹುದಾ? ಒಂದು ವೇಳೆ ವಾಲ್ ಮಾರ್ಟ್, ಟೆಸ್ಕೋ, ಕ್ಯಾರ್್ಫೋರ್್ನಂತಹ ಸೂಪರ್, ಹೈಪರ್ ಮಾರ್ಕೆಟ್್ಗಳು ಬಂದರೆ ರೈತರಿಗೆ ಯೋಗ್ಯ ಬೆಲೆ, ಗ್ರಾಹಕರಿಗೆ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಬೆಲೆಗೆ ಸರಕು ಸಿಗುತ್ತವಾ? ಈ ವಿಷಯ ಅಷ್ಟು ಸುಲಭಕ್ಕೆ ಅರ್ಥವಾಗುವಂಥದ್ದೆ? ಇವುಗಳು ಬರುವುದರಿಂದ ಯಾವ ಅಪಾಯಗಳೂ ಇಲ್ಲವೆ? ದೈತ್ಯ ವಿದೇಶಿ ಕಂಪನಿಗಳು ಚಿಲ್ಲರೆ ಮಾರುಕಟ್ಟೆ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾಲಿಟ್ಟರೆ ದೇಶಾದ್ಯಂತ ಇರುವ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಗಳ ಗತಿಯೇನು? 15 ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ 6,500 ಸ್ಟೋರ್್ಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ವಾಲ್-ಮಾರ್ಟ್ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಚಿಲ್ಲರೆ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವನ್ನು ಹಾಳುಗೆಡವದೇ ಇದ್ದೀತೆ?
ಕೃಷಿ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ ದೇಶದ ಅತಿದೊಡ್ಡ ಉದ್ಯೋಗದಾತರೆಂದರೆ ಚಿಲ್ಲರೆ ಮಾರಾಟ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ. Euromonitor длVкр Pricewaterhouse ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಕೋಟಿ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತು ಲಕ್ಷ ಚಿಲ್ಲರೆ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಗಳಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಜತೆಗೆ ಗೂಡಂಗಡಿ ಹೊತ್ತು ಮಾರುವವರು, ನೂಕುವ ಗಾಡಿಗಳ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯೂ ಸೇರಿದರೆ 3 ಕೋಟಿ ಮಾರಾಟಗಾರರಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿಲ್ಲರೆ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವೆಂದರೆ ಇವರೆಲ್ಲರೂ ಸೇರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ದೇಶದ ಕಾರ್ಮಿಕ ವರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಶೇ.10ರಷ್ಟು ಪ್ರಮಾಣ ಈ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದ್ದಾಗಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ ವಾರ್ಷಿಕ 250 ಶತಕೋಟಿ ಡಾಲರ್ ವಹಿವಾಟು ನಡೆಸುವ ಈ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದ ಮೇಲೆ ದೈತ್ಯ ಕಂಪನಿಗಳು ಕಣ್ಣುಹಾಕಿವೆ. ಒಂದು ವೇಳೆ ಚಿಲ್ಲರೆ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರದಲ್ಲಿನ ಶೇ. 30ರಷ್ಟು ವಹಿವಾಟು ದೈತ್ಯ ಕಂಪನಿಗಳ ಪಾಲಾದರೂ ಲಕ್ಷಾಂತರ ಜನರು ಉದ್ಯೋಗ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಚೀನಾ ಹಾಗೂ ಇತರ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಗಳಿಂದ ಹರಿದುಬರಲಿರುವ ಅಗ್ಗದ ಸರಕು-ಸಾಮಾನುಗಳು ನಮ್ಮ ಉತ್ಪಾದನಾ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಮಾರಕ ಹೊಡೆತ ನೀಡುವ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯೂ ಅನುಮಾನ ಬೇಡ. ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಮಹಾರಾಷ್ಟ್ರ, ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಮತ್ತಿತರ ಕಡೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆಯಾಗಿರುವ ಜರ್ಮನಿಯ ಮೆಟ್ರೊ ಹಾಗೂ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಆಫ್ರಿಕಾದ ಶಾಪ್್ರೈಟ್ ಚೆಕರ್್ನಂತಹ ಕಂಪನಿಗಳು ಎಂತಹ ಅನಾಹುತ ಮಾಡಬಲ್ಲವು ಮತ್ತು ಒಳನುಸುಳಿದ ನಂತರ ಯಾವ ರೀತಿ ಕಾನೂನನ್ನು ಧಿಕ್ಕರಿಸಿ ವಂಚನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಬಲ್ಲವು ಎಂಬುದೂ ಸಾಬೀತಾಗಿದೆ. ಭಾರತೀಯ ಮಾರುಕಟ್ಟೆಗೆ ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸಿದ ಒಂಬತ್ತು ತಿಂಗಳುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ 2.5 ‘Loyalty Card’ಗಳನ್ನು ವಿತರಿಸಿದ ಮೆಟ್ರೊ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸಗಟು ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ ಮಾಡಬೇಕೆಂಬ ನಿಯಮವನ್ನು ಉಲ್ಲಂಘಿಸಿ ನೇರವಾಗಿ ಗ್ರಾಹಕರಿಗೆ ಮಾರಾಟ ಮಾಡಲಾರಂಭಿಸಿದೆ. ಲಾಯಲ್ಟಿ ಕಾರ್ಡ್್ಗಳೆಂದರೆ ಇಂತಿಷ್ಟು ಖರೀದಿ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಇಷ್ಟು ಬೋನಸ್ ಪಾಯಿಂಟ್ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಒಬ್ಬನೇ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಯು ಖರೀದಿ ಮಾಡಿದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾರ್ಡ್ ತೋರಿಸಿ ಇಷ್ಟು ಪರ್ಸೆಂಟ್ ರಿಯಾಯಿತಿ ಪಡೆಯಬಹುದು. ಹೀಗೆ ವೈದ್ಯರು, ವಕೀಲರು, ಸಾಫ್ಟ್್ವೇರ್ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದ ಉದ್ಯೋಗಿಗಳು, ವಾಸ್ತುಶಿಲ್ಪಿಗಳು, ಚಾರ್ಟರ್ಡ್ ಅಕೌಂಟೆಂಟ್ಸ್ ಮುಂತಾದ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಗಳಲ್ಲದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳಿಗೂ ಲಾಯಲ್ಟಿ ಕಾರ್ಡ್ ನೀಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದರಿಂದ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಬೆಲೆಗೆ ಸರಕುಗಳು ಸಿಗುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂದು ಯೋಚಿಸುವ ಬದಲು ಮುಂದಾಗುವ ಅನಾಹುತವನ್ನು ಊಹಿಸಿ ಯಾವುದೋ ವಿದೇಶಿ ಕಂಪನಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಸಂಪನ್ಮೂಲವನ್ನು ದೋಚುವ ಜತೆಗೆ ಪಕ್ಕದ ಮನೆಯ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಯನ್ನು ಬೀದಿಪಾಲು ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಆ ಬೀದಿಪಾಲಾಗುವ ಕುಟುಂಬ ನಿಮ್ಮದೋ, ನಿಮ್ಮ ನೆಂಟರಿಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲೋ ಆದರೆ ಎಂದು ಯೋಚಿಸಿದಾಗ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯ ಗಂಭೀರತೆ ಅರ್ಥವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಮೆಟ್ರೊದಂತಹ ಕಂಪನಿಗಳಿಂದಾಗುವ ಪ್ರತಿಕೂಲ ಪರಿಣಾಮಗಳು ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಕಾಣದಿರಬಹುದು. ಆದರೆ ಅನುಭವಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದೇ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ.
ಹಾಗಾಗಿಯೇ ವಾಲ್-ಮಾರ್ಟ್, ಟೆಸ್ಕೊ, ಕೇರ್್ಫೋರ್, ಮೆಟ್ರೊ ಮುಂತಾದ ವಿದೇಶಿ ಹಾಗೂ ರಿಲಯನ್ಸ್, ಟಾಟಾ, ಪ್ಯಾಂಟಲೂನ್, ಬಿಗ್್ಬಝಾರ್್ನಂತಹ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಕಂಪನಿಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಆತಂಕಪಡಬೇಕಾಗಿದೆ. ಜತೆಗೆ ಈ ಕಂಪನಿಗಳು ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಎಪಿಎಂಸಿಯಂತಹ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯನ್ನೇ ಬುಡಮೇಲು ಮಾಡುವ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆಯೂ ಇದೆ. ರೈತರಿಂದ ನೇರವಾಗಿ ಖರೀದಿ ಮಾಡಲು ಮುಂದಾಗುವ ಕಂಪನಿಗಳು, ಕೊನೆಗೆ ತನಗೇ ಮಾರಾಟ ಮಾಡಬೇಕು ಅನ್ನುತ್ತವೆ. ನಂತರ ತಾನು ನಿಯಮಿತವಾಗಿ ಖರೀದಿ ಮಾಡುವುದರಿಂದ ಇಷ್ಟೇ ಬೆಲೆಗೆ ಕೊಡು ಎಂದು ರೈತರನ್ನು ಒತ್ತಾಯಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ಕಂಪನಿಗಳ ಮನೊಪೊಲಿ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ರೈತರು ತಿರುಗಿಬಿದ್ದರೆ ವಿದೇಶಿ ಉತ್ಪನ್ನಗಳನ್ನು ತಂದು ಸುರಿಯುವ ಮೂಲಕ ರೈತರಿಗೆ ಕೊಡಲಿಪೆಟ್ಟು ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಷ್ಟಕ್ಕೂ ವಾಲ್್ಮಾರ್ಟ್ ಮಾರಾಟ ಮಾಡುವ 30 ಪರ್ಸೆಂಟ್ ಸರಕುಗಳು ಚೀನಾದ ಉತ್ಪನ್ನಗಳಾಗಿವೆ. ಮಿಗಿಲಾಗಿ ಅಂತಾರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಕಂಪನಿಗಳು Predatory Pricing ಮೂಲಕ ಚಿಲ್ಲರೆ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕತ್ತುಹಿಸುಕಿ ಸಾಯಿಸುವುದಂತೂ ನಿಶ್ಚಿತ. ಅಂದರೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಅಂಗಡಿಗಳನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿ, ಭಾರೀ ರಿಯಾಯಿತಿ ಕೊಡುತ್ತವೆ. ಒಂದು ಖರೀದಿ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಉಚಿತ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತವೆ. ಆಗ ಚಿಲ್ಲರೆ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಗಳ ಗತಿಯೇನು?
‘ಬುಲ್ಡೋಜರ್ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ’ ಅನ್ನೋದು ಇದನ್ನೇ.
ನೂರು ಜನ ಮಾಡುವ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಒಂದೇ ಬುಲ್ಡೋಜರ್ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ ಅಂತ ನಾವು ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯದಿಂದ ಮೂಗಿನ ಮೇಲೆ ಬೆರಳಿಡಬಹುದು. ಇತ್ತ ಲಕ್ಷಾಂತರ ರೂ. ಬಂಡವಾಳ ಹಾಕಿ ಬುಲ್ಡೋಜರ್ ಖರೀದಿ ಮಾಡಿದ ಮಾಲೀಕನ ಕಿಸೆ ಕೂಡ ತುಂಬುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಆ ಬುಲ್ಡೋಜರ್್ನಿಂದ ನೂರು ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳ ರೊಟ್ಟಿಗೇ ಕುತ್ತು ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಬುಲ್ಡೋಜರ್ ಕೂಲಿ ಕಾರ್ಮಿಕರನ್ನು ನಾಯಿಪಾಡು ಮಾಡಿದರೆ, ವಾಲ್-ಮಾರ್ಟ್್ನಂಥ ಕಂಪನಿಗಳು ಆಗೇ ದುಕಾನ್, ಪೀಛೆ ಮಕಾನ್ (ಮುಂದೆ ಅಂಗಡಿ, ಹಿಂದೆ ಮನೆ) ಎಂಬಂತಿರುವ ನಮ್ಮ ಚಿಲ್ಲರೆ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಗಳ ವೃತ್ತಿ ಕಸಿದುಕೊಂಡು ಬೀದಿಗೆ ಹಾಕುತ್ತವಷ್ಟೆ. ಸೂಪರ್, ಹೈಪರ್ ಮಾರ್ಕೆಟ್್ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತರಕಾರಿ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡರೆ ಅದರ ಮಾಲೀಕನೊಬ್ಬನೇ ಉದ್ಧಾರವಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಸಂಪನ್ಮೂಲ ಕೆಲವೇ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳ ಬಳಿ ಕ್ರೋಡೀಕರಣವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ತರಕಾರಿ ಅಂಗಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಖರೀದಿ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಲಕ್ಷಾಂತರ ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳು ಉಸಿರಾಡುತ್ತವೆ.
ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಅಂದರೆ ಅಂಬಾನಿ, ಮಿತ್ತಲ್, ಬಿರ್ಲಾ, ಟಾಟಾ, ಕಿಶೋರ್ ಬಿಯಾನಿಗಳಂಥವರ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಮಾಡುವುದೂ ಅಲ್ಲ. ವಾಲ್-ಮಾರ್ಟ್, ಮೆಟ್ರೊ, ಕೇರ್್ಪೋರ್್ನಂತಹ ಗಿಡುಗಗಳನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸುವುದೂ ಅಲ್ಲ ಏಕೆ? ಹೇರ್್ಪಿನ್, ಕ್ಲಿಪ್ ಮಾರುವವರಿಂದ ಟೈಲರ್, ಕಿರಾಣಿ ಅಂಗಡಿ ಮಾಲೀಕರವರೆಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಬದುಕುವ ಹಕ್ಕಿದೆ. ಇಂದು ವಿದ್ಯೆಯ ಬಲದಿಂದಾಗಿ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಮಧ್ಯಮವರ್ಗ ಅಮೋಘ ಏಳಿಗೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿದ್ದು ಅದರ ಲಾಭ ಇಂತಹ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಜನರಿಗೂ ದಕ್ಕಬೇಕು. ಆದರೆ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಬಾಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು retail sectorಗೂ ಕಾಲಿಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ಉದ್ಯಮಿಗಳಿಂದಾಗಿ ಅರ್ಬನ್ ನಕ್ಸಲಿಸಮ್ ಆರಂಭವಾದರೂ ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ. ಅಷ್ಟಕ್ಕೂ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಯ ಹತ್ತಿರದ Friendly ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಗೆ ಅಂಗಡಿ ಅನ್ನೋದು ಕೋಟಿ ಕೋಟಿ ಕಮಾಯಿ ಮಾಡುವ ದಂಧೆಯಲ್ಲ, ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಪಾಡಿನ ಮಾರ್ಗ.

considering 1.2 to 3 crore retailers in india, but permission permission is given only for cities with min population of 10lakhs. there are 53 such cities and total pop is around 10-12 crore , how does walmart in bangalore affect retailer in tumkur or any other city.there is clause that min 50% investment should be in backend infrastructure like cold storages/godowns.retail chains will help in reducing middlemen. some jobs will be lost ,most of them are of middlemen.how many tea/coffee stalls lost jobs because of cafe coffee day/baristas. big retailers are predatory is accepted , it is politicians who should make laws in such a way that they(foreign retailers) wont control the market. bulldozers/machines made daily wage earners unemployed, but at end of 2-3 years if u construct a good house and give them wont they be happy.in industrialisation jobs will be lost. it can be walmart or reliance mart or big bazaar .ambani ,tata,birla,biyani : when govt is still allowing big companies owning tea estate in east , salt in west, software in south , iron, steel and coal in central india, oil and gas in sea,telecom throughout country and still say that only few people are making money, then it is because of laws and not because of companies.even indian retailers(reliance ,more,big bazaar,new q shop) are also responsible for job losses, why dont u oppose it.on quality side in big cities it is difficult to trust. many adultarators are caught in stings regularly. with brand recognition quality will improve and middle men will reduce.
it is correct that those who control this 25% will control india,but see other side no of macdonalds have increased but no udupi hotel is empty, starting price in mac 5 years back was Rs 35 now it is 25.

Hello , good and thought provoking, yet an immature and one sided thinking. Yes it gives the big blow to retailers, who cares about the middle class purchaser, somewhere flood in India should not cost onion to rs 120 , isn’t. It. We may buy the Chinese goods, the whole world buys now , and if its happening now in India not a surprise. What wonders me is our politicale system , should not loose the control over these multi brand retail entrants. If they start controlling the politics, probably what an east India company did in the history, will be done by these companies. If all goes fine then, I we the people ofindia will get a big benefit I believe, I feel it’s needed badly to the changing India.

The article couldn’t convince me that FDI is bad. For sure it will have some kind of impact on retailers, but it will be useful for customers.
As you mentioned retail market is huge in India, but it is not flawless. It needs lot of steamlining, I am not sure if the FDI is the only way out, but we can’t continue to buy things at higher price because we don’t know what is the right price.

Retailing as we know selling goods directly to customer for his personnel use.Government of India recently allowed foreign direct investment in retail sector.In India nearly 10-15 crore people are in retail business starts from small grocery shops to vegetables sellers on the footpaths.
Few facts about Indian Retail Industry.
1.Retailing accounts to 14-15% of India’s GDP.
2.Indian retail market estimated to 22 lack crores.
3.India is the one of the top 5 retail market in the world.
4.Retail giant like Wall mart turnover globally is approximately equal to india’s retail turnover.
There is a direct connection between the environment and the economy ,the economical steps which were not cared for environment have not helped human beings in the history neither socially nor economically .
Many are in the side of FDI and many are not because of the intricacies involved in the issue but to resolve this, environment impact is just a tool to understand whole issue logically as well as radically .
Some of the Major claims that government proving FDI is worth but
1.Government claiming Efficient supply system.
Yes in India due to lack of efficient end to end cold supply system 25% of the food produce going waste at the stage of harvesting and consumption.Retail giants come up with high end infrastructure like cold storage ,cold transportation.But country like India which is not providing electricity for its maximum percentage of people how can one ensure that it will provide electricity to large number of Cold storage units which are high electricity consuming .
To support this argument Indian telecom companies currently self generating 60% of the electricity because of acute shortage of the electricity from govt maintained electric grids.The generation involves diesel generators thus polluting the environment by burning diesel accounts to 6 million tones of CO2 annually as well as enjoying subsidized diesel.
2.Government claims FDI can reduce food wastage.
Majority of the retail giants like spencer,wallmart,tesco are wasting the food produce by 20-30% .Retail giants are rejecting food produce by its appearances like shape and color though quality ,nutrition meeting the standards.
3.Packaging Problem.
As retail giant always tries to mesmerize the customer by lucrative packaging .They use 75% more material compare to conventional retail system adding substantial amount of solid waste .A study conducted by the Waste & Resources Action Programme estimates that the food and drinks supply chain in the UK generates 5.3 million tonnes of waste in the form of packaging materials only. The total amount of waste generated when both rejected food and packaging materials are considered is a colossal amount and is responsible for serious environmental problems. In UK an estimated emission of 10 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent greenhouse gases can be attributed to the waste generated by the food and drinks supply chain .
4.Government claims Farming technology improvisation.
The days are coming where farmers wants to even drop minimum technology like using the fertilizers and to follow organic farming .In India day to day there is vast interest building in organic farming where the organic farming technique good for well being of human being and also for the environment .Retail giants which always look on profit never think of well being which proved in the history.
In US and UK retail industry forcing farmers to use more chemical fertilizers,insecticides,ripening agents,artificial colors and growth harmones (oxytocin)to achieve cosmetic looks for food produce like vegetables and fruits.
5.Government claims 10million employment and profit for farmers.
All over the world wall mart employs just 2 million people .It is far from the truth that in India retail giants like wall mart ,spencer creats 10 million job but significant number of jobs will be created but at the cost of small retailers income and their reducing job security because of competition.Coming to increase in profit for farmers, the study conducted by UK Competion commission claims that as retail giants achieve monopoly in market they will start to force the farmers to reduce price and follow ill procedures in procuring food produce and also clearing bills.
Verdict:With the entry of retail giants like wall mart,Tesco,spencer can bring large investment in tandem they bring tools to create social inequality,economical imbalance and great ill-impact on India’s rich biodiversity.India need bottom up approach than top down approach .

5> How many people know about the mall or retail concept in rural side > very minimum.

I think Basavarajesh has forget about the calculation of common Indian people. because, coffee day’s pricing and taste and they won’t be equal. But in the matter of retailer, we an get the items from Match box to Rice packet in the lowest price and we already seen the difference in this case(Being as a middle class guy, I already experienced and moreover my family has attracted to these big bazaar, reliance shops). It is just like a slow poison. And u forget another thing. Now a days we can see, lot of cities like Tumkur, are growing in population. As u said Bng’s Mart won’t affect Tumkur’s retailers, but as per Population there is a chance to open another Mart in Tumkur.. that’s what the concern of Prathap. We need be what we are.. India has its own style and we are unique from others….

As said by many other comments, though its a though provoking article, don’t agree or it does not convince us that FDI is really bad. You mentioned if any of our relative retailer gets impacted by FDI then we understand the real impact. It doesn’t make sense because we need to think about country as a whole and not about our relatives.
The whole system is corrupt now. Farmers are not getting the returns for their efforts. Final consumers like us are paying the double prices. It is few middle men who are making all the profits.
FDI has the potential to eliminate these middle men and deal with farmers directly. There will be competitive pricing for final customers as well.
I understand we are giving up 25% of our GDP to these foreign companies but why not if it is better than the corrupt system that we are living in. If it can bring in competitive pricing for consumers and farmers and create new jobs. How many people are really benefiting from the current system we have.
Instead of rejecting FDI right away, we should see if central government can put in such controls through its policies that these foreign companies do not dominate us but help us our economies grow, our people grow.
