BIG PUSH FOR IIT IN CITY

499.13-acre land identified for IIT at Thandavapura near Nanjangud; Mysuru District Administration submits proposal to Government of India

Mysuru, Aug. 4- Since the announcement that the Government of India would like to set up an IIT in Karnataka, various districts across the State have been vying for the honour.

There has been a stiff competition between Raichur, Hubli-Dharwad and Mysuru. Also the MPs of the respective constituencies have been meeting Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani and submitting memorandums with a request to set up the IIT only in their constituencies. However, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD), Government of India, is yet to decide on the place to set up the premier institution in the State.

Meanwhile, Mysuru-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha and Chamarajanagar MP R. Dhruvanarayan have submitted a memorandum in this regard.

MP Pratap Simha, who is known to be close to PM Narendra Modi, has been pushing much more than all other MPs and has repeatedly been convincing the Central Government that Mysuru being the hot bed of education and culture deserves to have an IIT.

To make his case stronger, he has been helped by the District Administration, which has prepared a report for setting up an IIT in Mysuru.

In its proposal, the District Administration has identified Government Silk Farm in Thandavapura near Nanjangud, Mysuru Taluk, located around 17 kms from city on Mysuru-Ooty National Highway 212 as the temporary premises for IIT.

According to the report, the State Government has already sanctioned 43.17 acres for Sericulture Department for Government Silk Farm on which the department has also constructed various buildings which is suitable for laboratories, classrooms, student hostels and staff quarters.

Meanwhile, the proposed land for the construction of IIT is near the Thandya Industrial Area in Adakanahalli and Thandavapura villages which is spread over 109 survey numbers and covering an area of 499.13 acres. The proposed land is located just 2.3 kms from the National Highway 212 and 2 kms from Thandavapura Railway Station. The land is also just 6 kms away from the Mandakalli Airport.

The report submitted by the District Administration also stated that the water to the existing industrial area was being supplied from River Kabini which flows just 2 kms away from the proposed land. There shall not be problems related to supply of electricity as there is a proposal to set up 2×12.5 MVA station at Adakanahalli in addition to the already existing 66×11 KVA station at Thandya Industrial Area.

Now, with the District Administration identifying the land and also sending its proposal for the IIT campus, it has to be seen whether the Union Government would choose Mysuru or other place for setting up the IIT
