hi!
personally i feel that 12th gr is too early to make a decision on carrer and choose optional sub. at 18 mind will be still immature on average. I feel choosing the carrer sholud be done after a basic bachelor dgree as it is practised some parts of the world. so having grade system up to 12th is a good idea and an individuals real talent can be acknowledged and appreciated and rewarded better by having a better slecetion system for jobs9evaluating total personality rather then just looking at marks card and by closing bad loop holes(reservation, political power, money etc).
i always feel that i made a wrong decision in choosing my profession at 18 just becaz I had good scores .

Dear Friend Pratap,

Your comments on other's thoughts are very much appreciated. I am also your fan like others. The information you pullout & the way you present are excellent. I am thinking in a bit different way here.
To improve any system, some one has to take risk. There will always be few negative points while initiating new idea. Why don't we suggest few rights steps to bring change, along with our comments ?

i agree to your views.
but what ever they make regarding the exam, the quality of teaching should be good.if the quality was good mean that there is not nesessary to think more about board exam/grading system.

happy to see your article on education.........
in our society people have an opinion that a CBSE student has more knowledge than the student studying any state syllabus.to some extent it is true because what we learn under Karnataka state syllabus in 6th or 7th std,a CBSE student studies that in 3rd or 4th std.even in IIT and AIEEE entrance exams CBSE students do better.also their aptitude will be comparitively high.now every one want their children to learn in CBSE schools.in big cities we can get good CBSE schools but in small towns there are many CBSE schools but don't know how many of them are certified.
so if a common syllabus is introduced all over the country then everyone will get equal education and there will be no more comparison.......
but if they remove 10th board exam then it wont be fair.already our primary education is ruined because of trimester system.i myself have experienced that trimester system when i was in 9th std.i remember what i'v learnt in 8th std but i don't remember what i'v learnt in 9th std......
good article.......i hope they will bring a good change.....

My Dear Pratap Simha:
I have been reading and apreciating your articles in VK.
Today i read about Kapil Sibal’s announcements about his attempts on educational reform(?) in the country.
I am with you on your views/comments.
It is a very well written article.
I also like to add here some more points about the so called grading system.
You mentioned about the unfairness in grouping together those securing 100% or 99% marks along with those securing 85% or 86% marks; assuming the cutoff marks is 85% marks; even when they differ by as much as 14-to-15% marks!
An even more serious injustice is to push down the one with 84% marks to the next lower grade, while at the same time pushing up the one with 85% or 86% marks to a higher grade level, although they differ by only ONE or TWO % marks!
Further injustice is done when final aggregation of grades are computed and reported at the end of the year/programme, with double decimal digit precision (Cumulative Grade Point Average or CGPA, usually compared for the purpose of declaring RANKs etc, usually computed up to two decimal digits precision).
The point here is the following – one of the strong justifications to go for grading system is that the teachers can not claim to have enough data/info to use a finer scale of %marks than a simple 10-point-scale that is used in grading; which is to say that the grades awarded are claimed to be accurate at the most to have a precision of 1-point-in-10-points in the 10-point-scale rather than 1-point-in-100-points in the 100-point-%scale.
If that is so, how can the aggregation process of computing the CGPA provide us with a two-decimal-digit-precision as usually claimed?!
And, the severity of competition and tension-creating environment does not get reduced in any way by the introduction of the grading system, as long as the notorious concept of CGPA with two-decimal-digit-precision is considered to be the measure of success in an academic programme!
The real question here is the following – will it be sufficient to report the CGPA on the same scale as the grades, that is the 10-point-scale with a precision/accuracy of 1-point-in-10-points?!
If that is acceptable (which i doubt) then the grading system can also be accepted.

I have written a paper entitled “Academic Performance Evaluation of Students : Ubiquitous System Analysed (APES_USA) : Raw Scores to Letter Grades to GPA is Unfair by Design”
in which i give more details about these concerns.
