An Old Story:

The Ant works hard in the withering heat all summer building its house and
laying up supplies for the winter.
The Grasshopper thinks the Ant is a fool and laughs & dances & plays the
summer away.
Come winter, the Ant is warm and well fed. The Grasshopper has no food or
shelter so he dies out in the cold.

The Grasshopper thinks the Ant's a fool and laughs & dances & plays the
summer away.

Come winter, the shivering Grasshopper calls a press conference and
demands to know why the Ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed
while others are cold and starving.
NDTV, BBC, CNN show up to provide pictures of the shivering Grasshopper
next to a video of the Ant in his comfortable home with a table filled
with food.

The World is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can this be that this poor
Grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?

Mayawati states this as `injustice' done on Minorities.
Amnesty International and Koffi Annan criticize the Indian Government for
not upholding the fundamental rights of the Grasshopper.
The Internet is flooded with online petitions seeking support to the
Grasshopper (many promising Heaven and Everlasting Peace for prompt
support as against the wrath of God for non-compliance).

Opposition MPs stage a walkout. Left parties call for 'Bengal Bandh' in
West Bengal and Kerala demanding a Judicial Enquiry.
CPM in Kerala immediately passes a law preventing Ants from working hard
in the heat so as to bring about equality of poverty among Ants and
Grasshoppers.
Lalu Prasad allocates one free coach to Grasshoppers on all Indian Railway
Trains, aptly named as the 'Grasshopper Rath'.
Finally, the Judicial Committee drafts the ' Prevention of Terrorism
Against Grasshoppers Act' [POTAGA], with effect from the beginning of the
winter.
Arjun Singh makes 'Special Reservation ' for Grasshoppers in Educational
Institutions & in Government Services.
The Ant is fined for failing to comply with POTAGA and having nothing left
to pay his retroactive taxes,it's home is confiscated by the Government
and handed over to the Grasshopper in a ceremony covered by NDTV.

Lalu calls it 'Socialistic Justice '.

CPM calls it the ' Revolutionary Resurgence of the Downtrodden '

Koffi Annan invites the Grasshopper to address the UN General Assembly.
Many years later...
The ant has since migrated to the US and set up a multi-billion dollar company in Silicon Valley,
100s of Grasshoppers still die of starvation despite reservation somewhere in India,

Its true that land shouldn't be forcibly taken from farmers. But my only question is about the timing of the protests. Why is it being done now, when all the infrastructures for the factory have been completed and the plant is almost set for production of cars? why didn't these people protest when the project started? what were they doing till now? Because of this bad timing, poor Tata is loosing Rs.1500 crores. When somebody (Ratan Tata) is doing something (Nano) which would make evry indian proud, we should support them.

The core of the article, better could have been to cite the SEZ policy, which came with it's own 'intentional flaws to cater both national economic interest and personal interests. Unlike other double-edged gov policies, the impact of SEZ is direct and instant-declaration on the lives of farmers.

The flaw lies in our inability to understand Crony-Capitalism. Think this- In the congress-raj Ramadoss, Home Patil to the Prez Patil, they have 'enabled' some businessmen in their own circles. But that is dirty use of power.Crony-ism can't be a policy objective but a small dosage of it is needed to stengthen the economy. SEZ got coined by the same congress-men and very few have dissected into it. Interestingly many local and international co.s had a fair deal from the goverments. Naidu & SM Krishna are two examples who worked in self-styled policies but a vision-oriented; This was much before we heard the word SEZ. So this new coinage should have a definite meaning and a purpose. I am surprised, why Pratap didn't present that picture.

If we have to talk about NANO issue, I concur with Sandesh. It is obvious that the world was awaiting a $2500 car and that too from India. It was not a shockwave but was definitely a mild tremor. So there is nothing wrong to 'guess' it as a knavish plot by other automotive MNCs.

If Pratap had to make a point, he could have even written about the huge land grabs in YS Reddy's regime too. WB only got so much attention because of the very charisma of the people invovled, What about the land-grabs in Anantapur district of AP, just 150Km away from Banagalore?

And, if Pratap had to give a recognition for Mamata, he could have done it little earlier too. Not under the light of current demand for TATA pullback. It is some times surprising to see how Pratap bumbles with few inches more emotion at the cost of logic. Something for sure, not exprected by hardcrore Pratap fans like me.

Dear friends,
This is in response to the comments above.
Firstly,Venkatesh,it is farmers land and was being farmed completely.I have a friend from Kharagpur who has visited the site and knows the realities. The communists are supposedly taking the land from the farmers by force. And Pratap Sir was right in telling that the land should be bought in the market price. How the farmers spend it,is their problem. Why shouldn't they get it for market price?I dont see the logic behind your statement,Venkatesh. So what if its a question of money?Ultimately that is what matters. The farmers have the right to get it for market price.Atleast they will have the satisfaction of getting a fair deal and can invest in land elsewhere or start some new ventures.
Secondly,Sandesh, yes,it is true that the same thing is being done by other companies. But sadly,we do not have Mamata Banerjees in every state so it goes unnoticed.Instead of blaming her and accusing her recklessly, please appreciate the good work she is doing.
Thirdly, people please shed your anti-MNC or foriegn retailers attitude in this era of globalisation. If we do not allow foreign companies to do business in our country, people from our country also cannot do business in foreign land.Besides,MNC s and foreign retailers create lots of job opportunities to our countrymen.
Pratap Sirs article,as usual was perfect if you ask me.

Regards,
Harsha Karanth

Dear freinds,
Of course its a land of farmers, many MNC's like DLF aquires the farmers land with no proper compensate to the land owner. And we will not question those companies. But in this case 'THE NANO PROJECT' is a pride for india. And tata is ready for better compenssate to farmer needs. And even offering job oppurtunities for localates.
And i hope the supporting hands for 'Mamtha' may be other car manufactures, to delay the project intentionally, so that they can come up with thier product mean while. And even there is no doubt , that competetors for 'TATA' are worried about their market status after the launch on 'NANo'.

And this seems to be the issue of 'MAMTHA BANNERJI' rather farmer issue, to improve her political statstics.

I dont think whatever the protest is going its being done by formers..

Yes i agree the point that the govt can not take lands as if it is granted by formers...but the formers needs to compensated properly not in terms of money..but they should get land in some other part and it should be as good as the one which they have sacrificed.

the IT companies are grabbing land in every state about 300-400 acres.. are they doing real estate business there or they are unknown DLF developers..for the company of about 10k or 15k employees how much land or office space you think they need..if you calculate that you will wonder what they do with 300-400 Acress of land....!!!!!!!!and they dont give a damn to the localites...at least TATA's are giving job to approx ly some 4000 local people

Coming back to the issue...i dont accept the Retail MNC are threat ...its compitiion you have to face...its a nature rule... ..you can not run away...from truth..you have to face and conquer it..in my area i have a kirani shop where i love to go and purchase..because i like that guys attitude and service....and the personal touch...i am customer to them from years..

and you wonder when you see a small shop in Tyagraj nagar who does a business more than some medium sized supermarket.

if they are Foreign Retailers yes i accept the protest they take away the money from country.. in that case why somebody does not protest against coffee day saying that its blocking customers of tea shop..i know this is absurd way of arguing but i just wanted to make point ...

anyway i accept taking a land from somebody is not fair and it should be planned ...and Reailer MNC and kirani shops should do fair business...to customers ...

no offense ..but i am not convinced with this article completely even though i accept the cause for it is right. and i dont think Mamta banerjee is so innocent...

Best regards,
